Customer story · Decentralized storage network

Protocol Labs replaced manual checks with Zyphe to verify Filecoin storage providers.

Protocol Labs

In short: Protocol Labs, the innovation network behind Filecoin, uses Zyphe to verify the identity of people who provide storage space to the Filecoin network. Verification was manual before Zyphe. Protocol Labs started with an early version of Zyphe in April 2023 and moved to the production platform in early 2025, verifying thousands of people a month at peak. It chose Zyphe over centralized identity verification providers because identity data is not held by one central platform.

What was Protocol Labs doing before?

People who offer storage space to the Filecoin network had to be identified, and Protocol Labs was doing it manually. That does not scale with a global community, and the people being verified are, by the nature of the network, unusually sensitive to who ends up holding their identity documents.

Protocol Labs evaluated other leading identity verification providers, all of which keep identity data in a central platform.

What did they deploy?

  • Zyphe identity verification built into the onboarding flow for storage providers.
  • Identity data kept out of a central database, which is the reason Protocol Labs chose Zyphe over the alternatives.
  • An early version from April 2023, moved to the production platform in early 2025 after the first phase worked.

What changed?

  • Manual identity checks replaced by an automated flow.
  • Thousands of storage providers verified a month at peak, worldwide.
  • In Protocol Labs' own words, users across the globe are onboarded faster and with greater confidence in the security of their data.
